Freshman Year is Over.

i am overall satisfied with freshman year. okay grades (3.62 for the year), good friendships formed, and it was nice to live on my own. okay, i'll just ramble, using this as a faux diary for everything that i was too lazy to write down.

as much as i hated not having a TV in my dorm room, it was SO GOOD for me. i got a lot more reading done (well, first semester when i had the time). i remember rushing back from class or cutting class altogether so i could finish reading "the stand" by stephen king. kind of reminds me of my middle school years, when i faked sick (7th grade, i think?) to read a copy of "carrie" i had found in the lost and found the day before. but aside from reading, i realllly miss my TV nights with my friends at school. my friends and i would get together the same times every week to watch certain shows. at the beginning of the year, it was house and beauty and the geek, and later on, ANTM (and since pussycat dolls was on right after that, we had to watch it.) and grey's. i really, really miss that. now i just record it and watch it by myself. alone. and miss living with my friends.

probably the thing i miss the most is having places i can walk to 24 hours. especially my beloved cathedral. at some points, i was there everynight at around 2am, sitting at my window (36th floor) listening to Air under the pretense of studying. i loved having friends with my sleep schedule, especially ones that would accompany you to study from 2-5am, when no one else was awake and it was just you and the janitors. another good memory of the cath: limboing through the 15.5th floor onto the outdoor platform, seeing 40's and dead pigeons lying around, and gazing at the stars. yeah, i miss the cathedral. a lot.

my ability to stay awake got progressively worse in college. i don't know how i did it so often in high school. finals week, i was a mess. but it's over, let's not think about it. but about finals, i was really proud of my A in calculus. i worked my ass off for that (it was a REALLY hard class) and although i spent way too much money on private tutoring (worth it), it's nice to get a good grade that you actually have to work for.

i was terrified about not being able to do my music in college, but several opportunities presented themselves. i joined a chamber music class, playing recorder (FINE, LAUGH.). i genuinely loved it (besides having to wake up at 10am, yikes!). we played various quartets/trios, etc with undergrads, grads, and faculty. my teacher mentioned me to another music teacher, and he wrote me an email asking me to take his baroque class. i'm really looking forward to that. there's something about playing an instrument that's so different from singing. it's important to have both though. i didn't really sing too much, i joined a makeshift a cappella choir, which was nice. i like a little more structure, though. but on the topic of singing, two of my friends are amazing guitar/ukelele/piano players, so we would often have sing-a-longs in my room. Radiohead, flaming lips, iron and wine, everything. i loved every minute of it. thanks to my parents, i had a full-sized electric keyboard in my room for the majority of the year.

i love all the music i've acquired at school. i've made about 4 new excellent playlists. it's nice being able to burn CD after CD of music from friends' laptops. i finally got ahold of girl talk (after many friends' suggestions), and i cannot stop listening to him (them?). i always associate that music with my religion class (strange, but true), so when i hear "once again," i picture the monster that eats the hearts of those whose heart doesn't weight the same as maat's feather. strange, i know. two mashups i highly recommend: "kanye manah" (cake covering the muppets and gold digger by kanye) and "cherry blossom sk8ter" (avril's skater boy and air's cherry blossom girl).

this summer i plan on singing the last harmonium concert and vivaldi's magnificat (with harmonium), which i am very much looking forward to. harmonium was really one of the things i missed the most when i went to school. i'm also going to CA to visit my cousin at berkley (she teaches ROTC). however, i'm only going with my mom and my aunt, so it should be an amazingly relaxing trip. the only other thing i'm doing this summer is taking macroecon at county (for credit) with chris, and ochem (audit) with jilu and jen. i'm actually really glad to be taking both classes, at least i'll have something to do.

i have not done anything since i've come home except watch one tree hill season III (a show i swore i hated...unfortunately, i'm addicted). and sleep. and eat normally (instead of that crappy grease they serve at college). my mom's been letting me sleep in until 1pm which is horrible. i don't know why she listens to me when i tell her to go away and not wake me up until later - she should know i don't REALLY mean it. also, my dad's been hiring me to do his rutgers grad course work. it's really interesting to see how the online course works and to give the students their grades (i don't change anything, i promise!). it's a lot more work for him than i thought it would be, considering it's only an online course.

things i plan to do this summer include: learn hindi (i'm ordering a book to help with the script) for the fall, work up several of my piano pieces, get better at guitar, get on a good schedule, and find a hobby.

the end. happy summer.

okay, so i hit an all-time record of 38 hours sans sleep for myself. i always find that when you get past a certain point, you start dreaming when you're awake, and your thought processes have taken a new route.

but anyway.

last night was fun. two of my friends came to my room at around 2.30 am-ish, and we had a craaazy 90's dance party. i forgot how amazing mmmbop was back in the day. yeah, things got kinda wild, i'm not gonna lie.

so here's a strange thing that happened to me today (besides our "blizzard"):
i went to the practice rooms at around 8ish tonight to practice for my music class. i always warm up my fingers by playing something really note-y and fast. i don't really care what it is, as long as it gets my fingers going. well anyway, today i started out with some debussy, and as i was happily playing in my supposedly soundproof room with the door shut, some punk knocks on my door and goes:

"you're playing that completely wrong. it's half the tempo,  you're just doing that to show off."

i'm like, "oh." then he walked away, and i scowled after him. yeah, i'm still bitter about that. he was actually angry at me. and i was NOT showing off in my little closed, soundproofed room. asshole.

and here's another strange thing - for my ancient egyptian religion class, we were supposed to go on our first field trip, but it was canceled because of the blizzard. but the field trip was actually a picnic. in a cemetery. how amazing is that. i think i actually would've really enjoyed it. although the whole finding my way there part wouldn't be fun. c'est dommage. maybe again.

i've been trying to improve (aka not forget) my french by watching all movies and tv shows with french subtitles. i highly suggest it.

okay bye.

I guess failing an exam was inevitable...

I failed my first exam today - biology. I mean, out of all the exams, this was the "expected" one to fail. Maybe because it was 9 chapters long and on the hardest material in the book? Perhaps. Lucky for me, she drops the lowest grade. I'm hoping I won't get any lower than my prized 62.

Also, Mets lost the playoffs. Oh, maybe that's why I failed - I was too busy watching them LOSE.

But my mom and aunt are coming today and bringing me brownies and a piano, so I guess it's okay. When they ask how I did on the exam, I'll tell them "fine," like always. After all, it's really the end grade that counts.
